THE ACTIVITY IN TEACHING: COMMUNICATIVE LANGUANGE TEACHING (CLT)


Communicative languaage teaching is one of approach for teaching english as a foreign or second language to be a good communication. Many activities that we can use as a teacher to teaching CLT. Actually, the activity for CLT have similarities with the activity of other methods. The different is only about assumption of language and language learning. The following this is one of the basic activities suggested by Finocchiaro and Brumfit.
            The first activities are presentation of a brief dialogs and a discussion of the function and the situation-people, roles, setting, and the informality or formality of the language which the function and situation demand. In this activity, the teacher should be prepare a good media such as dialog picture when the learners in restaurant. What will be waiter and guest tell about. It is like classroom but the setting in restaurant. So, the learners will using the language when they are in restaurant. Based on the concept in CLT, that language items are presented in a real situation.
            The second is oral practice generally, preceded by the model. The teacher will divided into entire class repetition, half class, groups and the individuals to do the same situation. In this activity, the learners will be active to communicate what the situation and give them feedback. After that, there are question and answer based on dialog topics and situation itself. The question and answer also related to the students’ personal experience but centered around the dialog theme. The teacher can use of the expression structure with familiar vocabulary in mini-dialog. It shoud using pictures, simple real objects, or dramatization to clarify the meaning of the expression.
            The last but not least is the rules underlying the functional expression. This should include at least four points, e.g. "How about + verb + ing"; its position in the utterance; its formality or informality in the utterance; and in the case of a structure, its grammatical function and meaning. In addition, oral recognition, interpretative activities (two to five depending on the learning level, the language knowledge of the student, and related factors)
            Finally, the teacher can use some activities in the CLT, they will enrich their understanding of communicative teaching and they will find relatively effective activities to teach a language as means of communication.
