A few days ago I observed in one of private school in Kendari, namely SMAS Idhata Kendari. My reason to choose the school as a place of my observation because of its location near in my home as well as I know the headmaster that he is one of lecturer in my campus, this high school has a principal who great to have an accreditation A.
Early in the morning, Wednesday on April 20 2016, before I observed, I had been making appointment to the english teacher in there. Then, I interviewed to the teacher about the syllabus and lesson plan. We disscussed while waiting for class to start. It was my first time for observation. I asked permission for teacher to bring the lesson plan that he had made as a comparative material during class but he forgot at home. Soon the bell rang, class was started. But the teacher entered the class yet. He still enjoyed to tell his experience, I checked the clock on my phone. The class begin on 8:45 am but he entered the class on 08.55 am, he told me that he could not teach as usual because his condition not good.
The student that I observed in the classroom were first grade in senior high school. Teacher entered the class followed by me, the students seemed so curious and excited to why I was there. Students in that class was 25 people. The teacher asked me to introduce my self. After that, the teacher took over the lesson. The first thing that he did to start the class, checked their homework but I was so surprised and shocked, the student was so noisy, lazy, and some of them have not finished their homework. Teacher just leave to theirself, there was no penalty or feedback to students who have not finished their homework. the teacher only care with the student who had been working on. whether I look they were already familiar with their homework. It was about their favorites of the film, actor, actress, and singer and telling their reason why they loved. The teacher asked one of the student which have finished it. The attitude of the student that I look, she was not feel like the teacher. She did not respect to the teacher. when the teacher checked one of them, the classroom was very noisy. Some of them were play mobilephone, discussed with other friends, laughed, and fighted. Teacher could not act as a controller. The students did not pay attention to the teacher at all. I was so surprised to watch them.
At 30 minutes run out the teacher just asked their homework to one student. Then, I was surprised again because I ordered by the teacher to checked their homework, I asked to him how about the student who have finished their homework them because almost all of the students have not finished their homework. He said to me judt check out the task of students who have been worked. Then, I asked one by one around the classroom who were already worked and I was curious about what the reason they have not finished their homework but I did not get an answer that makes my heart satisfied. I was so shocked in the class. Even I told them work it their task directly, they dit it well. Actually, they were clever.
I felt yawned in the class. Teacher just sitted down to look my progress and their student. It really makes me wondered. I spend much time to checked them. I honestly think that this process was not effective for the teaching. I seemed, he was not ready in teaching and not based on the lesson plan. He not indicated the nature of the pedagogical and professional teacher. After spent the time in asking a homework assignment. The teacher command three students to wrote the last book of guidance material on the board. The First student wrote about an example of request statement. The second Student wrote an example of accepting statement and the third student to wrote an example of rejecting/refusing. The materials on that day about request, accepting, Rejecting/refusing. The others students wrote in their book. But, they did not seem serious to noted. Even, they looked did not noted on the board. They only making joked with their friends. The class atmosphere was very bad situation.
Teacher can not be a model in teaching. Ironically, there were student late the class but the teacher just let them to entered the class. After spending a long time to waited for finished their note. Teacher admitted to me that his taught can not be maximal because his condition is not well but actually I saw him look healthy. I have no idea. After that, the teacher standed up and explain all the material on the board. But they only make the matter joke material. And I saw the writing on the board there were a student who was not wrote the matter on that day. It makes me very surprised because teacher do not care about that writing, he continued his explain. I listened the explain, I think there was some mistakes in his explain.
I began to understand the importance of lesson plan in teaching but the teacher did not make it. Less than 10 minutes the bell rings, but the students could not wait to get out of the class. Also, they were not revealing of behavior but they dare reveal to the teacher that they want a quick finish. The explanation of the teacher was finished, all of them showed the attitude of happy and relieved when the bell rang completed the lesson. I asked permission from the teacher to give the impression to be here and express my feelings surprised them while the teacher checked the attendance list.
Finally, teacher went out of the classroom and students expressed to me their reasons why from the beginning to the end of the class they behave like that, the reason was they did not like that teacher. They do not like the teacher because she had a scandal they can not expressing. I was worried at the teacher because the teacher must have a good personality and social. After that, I went out of the classroom and thank to them and continued with the photos together. Teacher waited to me in the office and told me to take a lesson plan and syllabus in the afternoon which it lag his home.
In the afternoon, I went to his home and I was given a syllabus and lesson plan but I red the syllabus and lesson plan were not the same as the material who taught in the morning. It so different. I asked to teacher's lesson plan that at the time he taught, but he said that was not make it and can not be give to me in the near future while the collection of observation report was imminent. So, I could not wait them.
